The Power of Excellence

Lyndon B. Johnson, 36th president of the United States, once made a very profound statement. He said, “I believe the destiny of your generation – and your nation – is a rendezvous (the meeting place) with excellence.

Is there really a connection between excellence and a great future? What is excellence anyway?

Excellence is defined as the condition of achieving results that are excelling, superior, surpassing or greater than that of others, in degree and/or quality.

The very foundation of human civilization is rooted in the quest for getting better results than have been had, doing more than has ever been done, or doing what has been done in some better way. The foundation of humanity’s ability to create inventions, make new discoveries, and advance in the areas of technology, academics, innovation and self-improvement, and charity are rooted in the quest for excellence. The quest for excellence is the most important factor in for human growth and success.

The quest for excellence is a basic part of the reason for the success of every great man. Whether it was Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr, Alexander the Great, Abraham Lincoln, or the Lord Jesus Christ, they all sought to do something better, something different, something more than what others had ever done. They all sought for what was actually excellence.

Excellence is the root of greatness. Excellence is defined as the result of the pursuit of perfection. God said to Abraham, Walk thou before me, and be thou perfect (Gen 17:1), so we know that God desire is for us to be excellent. The reason we honor great men like we have mentioned above is because they are excellent. There is a natural knowing in us that an excellent man ought to be respected. This is why rulers want to be referred to as His or Her Excellency.

God is to be honored because He is most Excellent. Excellence is constant aim. So why is this world like this? – someone may ask. Well, man is a creature whom God has given free will, and the Bible says The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD’S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men [to rule over] (Ps 115:16).

The Bible says ‘O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!’ (Ps 8:9). A person’s name is his identity, or reputation. God’s reputation is for excellence, because that is His nature, habit and lifestyle – and we are made in His image…

Excellence is the will of God for our lives.

In our next article, we shall discuss a bit about the BENEFITS of excellence.
